Citizenship and Immigration Canada recommends that foreign nationals seek a six- month study license to study on or after completing the original program if they intend to work on campus or continue their studies in Canada.

Every small child residing in Canada can study in Canada, without a study permit, at a pre-school, primary or secondary school. The same applies to children of temporary residents or workers, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary students. This exemption applies not to children of provisional residents not permitted to work or study in Canada( i.e. guests)

Family Members and Private Staff of ambassadors

Family members or private staff members of foreign diplomats approved in Canada do not require an authorization to study.

A family member who is an exception as

  • the spouse or common-law partner;
  • the dependent child of the individual or their wife / common-law partner; or
  • The dependent kind of a dependent child

Officers of other Armed Forces in Canada

There are some countries whose armed forces come through the Visiting Forces Act do not need permission to study in Canada.
